Dongletown guide
USB-C vs Thunderbolt
USB-C is a shape. Thunderbolt is a capability. This guide explains why that difference keeps costing people money.
Updated June 1, 2026
USB-C describes the connector. Thunderbolt describes a faster, more capable connection that can carry data, video, and power in ways ordinary USB-C may not.
If you only need one monitor and a few accessories, ordinary USB-C is often enough. If you need high-resolution displays, fast storage, and a permanent desk setup, Thunderbolt may be worth the cost.
